On sex and films (turin)
Yup, I see what you mean. And it's tough because what doesn't engage you might tear the heart out of the next person (I vividly remember someone sobbing her heart behind me at a film I can't remember the name of).
I don't know. At the end of the day, you can't speak for everyman, you just have to give your own opinion. To me that's one of Filmaster's strengths. It links you up with people who share similar tastes. Is there anyone else out there who would secretly love to give Top Gun 10/10
Women and westerns (tobermory)
La salaire de la peur - it got one point for the ending, which I thought gave the whole thing some credibility. It got a second point for making me laugh. The final-ish scene where the truckload of highly flammable nitroglycerin is parked up beside the out-of-control fire surrounded by men wearing fire-proof suits and Yves Montand lights up a cigarette still makes me giggle.
I'm thinking about giving it a third point for Charles Vanel's performance (I now know that you can die of a broken leg,
On sex and films (turin)
Great title, and good question!
I have to admit, t's never really occurred to me to be objective when reviewing a film, almost the opposite. I tend to write what I'd tell a friend if they asked me my opinion and rate them accordingly.
That said, there are a few films I absolutely hate, but that I would rate highly. Brazil springs to mind. I would have walked out if I'd been able to. I had to stick it out to the bitter end, and have to acknowledge that a film that affected me so powerfully
Crazy Heart (tobermory)
Colin Farrell, I agree, acting-wise it could have been better, but he's sooo purdy (reminded me of Brad Pitt in Legends of the Fall) :0)
And I just watched Rio Bravo. I see where the comparison is, they're pretty cool guys too. It's not bad for a western...
Women and westerns (tobermory)
OK, so some girls like westerns, at least more than me :0) and five maybe is a bit low. It probably is better than average.
Thanks for suggestions turin, apart from the first and last (and you're right with Butch and the Kid, I love it), I don't know any of them, I'll see if I can track them down.
On the strength of michuk's recommendation (sort of), I just watched Rio Bravo. That was pretty good, funny and clever despite being a westen ;0)
Revisiting Apocalypse Now for the AFI Project (Pippin2010)
Hi Pippin, I agree completely on this one. I've also seen it a couple of times, most recently a few months ago, and I remember thinking the same.
Even though it's a war film, which wouldn't normally float my boat, I still admired, if not really enjoyed it. Definitely agree with your points on the ending and ditto, don't watch it before bedtime :0)
Dobry, zły i brzydki (1966)
One of the many things I like about Filmaster, is that '12 Angry Men' tops the rankings. So, I thought, as Filmasters have such good taste, I should check out the rest of the list.
Well, starting at

What is it with men and westerns?
First impressions from a newbie
Me again,
First, thanks for long and detailed reply - there's lots here I just didn't get, and I appreciate you taking the time to explain.
One point about the slow site. Remember that it's not always under your control. Our 'broadband' connection can go from 6 meg to dial-up speed in the course of a day. When I first wrote the comment, imdb was running just as slowly as your site, due to our slow connection.
Sorry to bother you with one more question. ls it possible to search the rankings
Revisiting The Maltese Falcon for the AFI Project (Pippin2010)
Hi Michuk,
Maybe I overdid it a bit on the black and white front :0).
12 Angry Men is a great film, it's in black and white. So is The Great Dictator, which is both black and white, and older than the MF. So it's not just the fact that it's old, or that it's in black and white that bothers me.
What bothers me is that it's rubbish, but because it's old and black and white (and probably because Bogart is in it, and was directed by John Huston) it's treated like a national treasure. It might
Revisiting The Maltese Falcon for the AFI Project (Pippin2010)
Hi Pippin,
I've been following your reviews, and I was interested when this one popped up. I have (irrational!!) strong feelings about this film, and I was curious to see what you'd make of it. In the end, I agree with a lot of what you say, but I wouldn't be so kind.
It annoys me immensely that this film appears in a top anything list. The plot is skimpy, everyone speaks so fast it's almost impossible to follow the dialogue, it's in black and white and apart from all that, it's just plain old
Szalone serce (2009)
Crazy Heart is the tale of Bad Blake, a washed-up country singer, who's life is transformed by the woman he falls in love with.
It's a simple story. We've heard it all before, and in theory, it has

I love what you're doing here. The very fact that 12 Angry Men is #1 in your rankings says it all for me.
I found the site a few days ago, and I've been messing around trying things out and seeing how things work, and here are some first impressions while my eyes are still fresh.
Minor points:
On the edit profile page http://filmaster.com/account/edit-profile/
It's not made clear that you're only allowed 255 characters for the 'About you' field. It was a bit of a pain to have to edit
The Welcome Topic
Hi all,
I'm Elaine, a PHP developer at the moment, but aspiring to be a screenwriter.
Like hellafun, I've watched more films than I can remember. In particular I reckon I might have seen every film released between 1990-93! Now my habit is under better control, and I'm planning to put all those hours to use by writing reviews (and maybe earn a few bucks).
I like the idea of the site. I'm particularly looking for somewhere to keep my reviews in a way that's more powerful than IMDB offers.
Dwunastu gniewnych ludzi (1957)
Every so often you see a film that restores your faith in the cinema. And this was it. 12 Angry Men is brilliant, just brilliant. I've been a film fan for a long time, and I thought I'd seen all the really
Ordinary People
'Ordinary People' won its Oscar nearly thirty years ago, and I've only just seen it for the first time. I thought I'd seen all the great films of my lifetime. How did this one slip through the net?
